Dame Alice Owen’s School, Potters Bar

Our project was completed over 3 phases and our team enjoyed working well with the school. This was of particularly importance as our site was situated right in the middle of the school and our understanding of the school’s busy timetable was key to ensuring the successful completion of our contract.

Phase 1 – Design and Build a new 3 storey teaching block to create 18 new classrooms, staff offices and WC / changing areas. The communal and circulation areas at the heart of the building accessed by a modern central staircase lay beneath a stunning central atrium providing light to all floors. All the oak detailing to this area was manufactured and installed by our in house joinery division.

Phase 2 – Involved the careful and timely demolition of an asbestos ridden building during the school holidays.

Phase 3 – Landscaping to the area where the old building stood to create an attractive outdoor 200 seater amphitheatre and garden area.

The new teaching block was built off piles and ground beams; the superstructure was constructed with a reinforced concrete frame and a traditional masonry envelope surrounded highly efficient solar glazing on all facades. We proposed life cycle cost savings for the school introducing our design of efficient environmental improvements including solar panels and heat exchange ventilation with comfort cooling.
