Remodelling – Avenue Baptist Church

This exciting new scheme saw a run-down church brought back to life as full refurbishment works were carried out for the first time since the 2nd world war.

The project involved the remodelling and complete strip out of the church interior including removal of the organ, choir structure and all internal features.

The front elevation of the church was extended to create a bigger lobby area and tea station. The elevation was temporarily propped to allow the new steel work to be craned into place to hold up the front façade. The existing stonework and windows were carefully removed and re-used within the new extension, giving the impression that the extension was of the same age as the existing structure. On the roof of the new extension a glass lantern was installed to fill the lobby and church with natural light.

A new baptistery pool was built in front of the stage in the shape of a cross, the pool has been fully tiled with a bespoke mosaic floor designed and installed by a local installed. When not in use the pool has a removable sectional glass floor, this allows the mosaic to be seen whilst maximising the floor space for events such as amateur dramatic performances, concerts and art displays.

The existing galleries were re-built to incorporate two new glass sided spiral stair cases, one each side of the sanctuary area. A glass balcony was installed to the first floor providing staged seating and better viewing angles of the stage and baptistery pool below.

The rear rooms to the church were remodelled to create a new prayer room and office, access to the crèche and flower room have been improved by repositioning doorways.

The project was presented with the Annual Design Conservation Award 2018!
