Colchester Arts Centre awarded UK Winner of ‘A quirky Design Toilet’ at the Loo of the Year Awards.

We are delighted to have attended the Loo of the Year Awards and receive awards for “A Quirky Design Toilet’, ‘National Category Winner’ (Heritage) and ‘Eco Toilet of the Year’ Awards for the toilet refurbishment works we completed at The Colchester Arts Centre.

The toilets had a particularly unique design which local artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding created. The Colchester Arts Centre commissioned Anne to transform a converted church, the Cistern Chapel, into toilet facilities using a fun, creative design that reflects the town’s history.

The artist designed a series of wall mosaic which we assembled and mounted onto the walls of the toilets. The mosaic was created using the community’s memorabilia, including recycled crockery, pennies and photographic transfers depicting the venue’s history.

The ‘Quirky’ toilet design has not only received high praise and attention from the local community but has also managed to make it onto the ITV news and the social media accounts of comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis, who have performed there.

The ACE funded project also won other awards that night, including the ‘Platinum plus overall award’ and ‘Washroom Cleaner of the year.’
